laura was thrilled to touch the atlantic ocean for the first time. it was cold. jenna was saying that the atlantic ocean is actually warmer on the coast than the pacific ocean or something like that. well we've been to both and we don't believe her.
but we enjoyed it anyway. it was warm and sunny but not hot. after a couple days in new york city, a nice day at the shore was just what the doctor ordered. well, that and sunscreen.
our favorite (and only) nephew carter also enjoyed the coast.
the next day we started on our vacation-within-a-vacation to pennsylvania amish country and washington dc. we don't have a lot of photos from amish country because (a) the amish don't care for cameras very much, and (b) we were too busy sneezing or buying delicious jams to take any photos. also, (c) we figured scott/dad would be taking some photos we could use as a backup anyway.
on our way into dc we stopped by the temple. it was hot and warm and a beautiful day. we decided that the washington dc temple looks like a futuristic version of the salt lake temple.
a beautiful day and beautiful surroundings made for some beautiful photos.
austin is quite sure that this photo could end up on a church magazine cover someday.
we made it into washington dc for a quick evening visit to the mall (not the shopping kind). we passed by the obama residence just as one of the marine helicopters was flying someone important in. scott/dad talked about it possibly being a decoy, after which he and austin tried to convince braden that there were not only decoy helicopters and cars but several decoy white houses. he didn't buy it.
the lincoln memorial and the reflecting pond (it probably has an official name but we're not going to look it up) made for a very picturesque setting. literally.
we also visited the washington monument and the world war 2 memorial.
amish country, the dc temple, and the national mall were all in one day, and those of us in the back seats of the rental van were happy to get to our hotel rooms and enjoy some grilled cheese sandwiches.

I'm so glad you got to go and see so many wonderful things... and you got it almost exactly right... it's the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Your pictures are just wonderful!

The Atlantic really is warm. In the summertime. Really, it is! Poot, I didn't know you were in town, if only very briefly. Sounds like a super trip.
Admittedly, I haven't been to the "coast" part of the east coast that much, but I'm really skeptical about Jenna's claim about the Atlantic being warmer than the Pacific. Well, maybe the Atlantic in July would be warmer than the Pacific in December, maybe. :) But I'm jealous of such a great trip.
