happy 4th

We couldn't resist a cute July 4th outfit!

We had been wondering how we were going to spend our first Independence Day as a little family -- we thought we might end up cooking hamburgers on the stove and watching a movie.

But Austin's friend Jeremy came to the rescue and invited us to spend the day with his family at his parents' house. What a backyard view!

We enjoyed some games with Jeremy, Monica, Sam, and Jeremy's cousin.

Brooklyn made a new buddy -- Jeremy's dad was a hit!

We went out on the lake in a canoe, which was a lot of fun. Since that "we" didn't include Brooklyn, Laura wanted to let her dip her feet in the water.

She loved it and kicked and splashed way more than she does in the tub.

We had a little "talent show" before the fireworks. Austin played a song he wrote that was inspired by a Civil War battle (Jeremy was kind to make an impromptu appearance on slide guitar). But Jeremy's dad was the star of the show -- he had everyone laughing with a great Lewis Carroll poem/performance.

We started our fireworks right at dusk.

We loved the wacky names each different firework in our pack had. Our favorites were "Silver Eagle Ball," "Witch Doctor," and "Garden in Spring."

The fireworks over the lake were just awesome. We'll take this view over Stadium of Fire any day. And we even had a classic rock soundtrack thanks to neighbors across the lake, so we had the concert part covered too!

We had a great time with Jeremy and Monica and their family -- the food was great, the games were fun, and the setting was perfect. It was the next best thing to being with family.

What fun! We celebrated a day early by feeding about 28 missionaries BBQ hamburgers, corn on the cob and the works...then on the 4th we picked up 4 Visa Waiting missionaries and trained them, fed them leftover BBQ and took them around to their trainers. It was fun. WE do miss the traditional backyard family BBQ though!
