march trip

So, back in January/February when our Cougs were playing awesome we bought tickets to the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight games in Anaheim. We were confident that they would get placed in that region and win their first two games in Denver and thought it would be a great birthday present for Austin to go down and watch our favorite team play. It was also a great excuse to go visit Laura's family in Apple Valley and we were excited about both reasons for the trip.

Well, to make a long story short, BYU didn't end up in that part of the NCAA bracket, but we wanted to go visit Laura's family anyway. And even though the Cougs made a great run for a shorthanded team, they couldn't quite come through on a belated birthday gift for Austin when they lost to Florida in overtime.

But while we were sad to see BYU lose, we were happy to see them play so well under the circumstances and to advance farther than they've been in 30 years. We were even more happy to spend time with Laura's family and to celebrate Austin's birthday with them.

Some of you may have (or at least know of) the tradition of a red plate for a special occasion.

Austin chose homemade tacos for his birthday meal and they were tasty!

Getting ready to open presents with Laura's family.

German chocolate cake is one of Austin's very favorites.

One of the days we were there, we decided to go bowling -- we realized this was quite possibly the first time we had been bowling together (not counting Wii bowling). How did we date and get married at BYU without going bowling? Add to that the fact that we've never played ultimate frisbee or gone mini golfing together and it makes for one strange courtship by BYU standards.

Laura edged ahead of Austin and Perry to get the high score. She was pretty happy about that.

Austin remembered to bring his soccer shoes and soccer ball this time, and while the weather wasn't great (cold, rainy) for playing outside, we managed to sneak in some time to kick the ball around outside.

We had a great time visiting Laura's family and we were very glad we made the trip. It was fun to be there under more casual circumstances rather than for Thanksgiving or Christmas when things can get a little crazy -- although we love being there those times as well. It's fun to mix it up.

We also got to meet up with one of Austin's best friends (who is studying at grad school in Riverside), which we've been meaning to do for a while now. We had a a great time catching up with their family and enjoyed a tasty lunch.

We had a great trip and are hoping to maybe make it back this summer sometime if things aren't too crazy.
